As the nation mourns President Jimmy Carter’s passing, we are reminded of his unparalleled legacy as a beacon of charity and community giving. Regardless of your political leanings, the country celebrates how he embraced a life of service that embodied the highest ideals of compassion and humanity. His moral leadership extended far beyond politics, as he worked to heal divisions, bring hope to the marginalized, and inspire others to live lives of purpose.

Many of us will reflect on the past year and think about how to make a difference in the year ahead. Over my career, I have been lucky enough to have worked with The Home Depot and 1-800-Flowers.com where we were afforded opportunities to support our local communities through initiatives with The Home Depot Foundation, Smile Farms Inc., and Feeding America. And locally, I have been fortunate to belong to a community organization that has supported the community since 1904.

For over a century, the Commonwealth Club of Montclair has been part of the fabric of our local community, championing service and connection. Whether through scholarships for Montclair High School students, donations to local organizations like Toni’s Kitchen and the Montclair Ambulance Unit , or simply fostering a sense of belonging, the Club demonstrates how meaningful it is to give back.

“I have learned that our greatest blessings come when we are able to improve the lives of others, and this is especially true when those others are desperately poor or in need.” Jimmy Carter

As you consider your goals for 2025, think about how you can incorporate charity and community support into your daily life. Here are some ideas inspired by our work at the Commonwealth Club:

1. Support Local Organizations Through Donations or Volunteering

Giving back can take many forms, but financial contributions and volunteer work are two of the most impactful. Local organizations, such as Human Needs Food Pantry, Laptop Upcycle , Backpacks For Life, Brookdale Park Conservancy and Montclair Ambulance Unit, often rely on the generosity of individuals to continue their work.

Volunteering is another excellent way to make a difference if donating isn’t an option. Whether serving meals, participating in a fundraiser, or lending your skills to an organization’s behind-the-scenes work, your time and effort can create a lasting impact.

At the Commonwealth Club, we’ve seen firsthand how this support makes a difference. From organizing community events to sponsoring scholarships, our initiatives are powered by the collective contributions of individuals who care about Montclair.

2. Incorporate Charity into Everyday Life

Even with a busy schedule, there are ways to support your community in your daily routine. Attending events hosted by local non-profits or utilizing their services shows your support and strengthens their presence in the community.

When you engage with a non-profit—whether by participating in their programs or spreading the word about their mission—you amplify their impact. For example, organizations like Toni’s Kitchen thrive because of both donors and community members who actively participate in their efforts.

The Commonwealth Club has long embraced this philosophy. By participating in activities like our historic bowling league or joining local fundraisers, members contribute to the greater good while enjoying a sense of camaraderie.

3. Embrace Small Acts of Kindness

Sometimes, making a difference doesn’t require significant time or resources. Small acts of kindness can go a long way in building a stronger community.

Whether helping a neighbor shovel their driveway, donating gently used items to a local shelter, or simply checking in on someone who might need support, these small gestures create ripples of positivity.

The Commonwealth Club’s members have always understood the power of small acts to foster connection and care. These everyday contributions are the foundation of a thriving, supportive community.
